DB966506_1975_10_Doncaster_A3_800dpi

            One of my early colour transparencies from the autumn of 1975 using a Hanimex Compact “point and shoot” camera. My quality standards were pretty low in those early days so this very poor image avoided the waste paper bin at the time. Even with todays technology and numerous attempts I have been unable to produce a satisfactory colour image and have finalised on this black and white version.

Stabled in the shed yard at Doncaster MPD is snowplough DB966506, 18th October 1975.

Locomotive History
DB966506 has obviously been converted from a Class 08 locomotive and was originally 13078 and was built at Darlington Works, entering traffic in January 1954 allocated to Hull Dairycoates MPD. Renumbered D3078 in the 1957 renumbering scheme it transferred to Tyne Dock in July 1961. This was followed by spells at Percy Main, Gateshead and Thornaby before withdrawal in November 1972. In late 1973 conversion commenced at Doncaster MPD of withdrawn class 08 locomotives D3006, D3035 and D3078 to snowploughs. Work was completed in early 1974 when they were renumbered ADB966507/08/06 respectively. These conversions were followed by a further two, D3037 and D3069 becoming ADB966510/09 respectively later in the year. This fleet was added too in 1977 with the conversion of 08111, 08117 and 08119 to ADB966512/13/11, later being renumbered ADB968012/10/11 respectively. DB966506 was located at Doncaster MPD until it was broken up at Doncaster Works in August 1979.
