Pantanal '12

            Hyacinth Macaw. At 100 cm and 1 to 2 kg, this gorgeous parrot is the largest and biggest species of its highly intelligent family. Though endangered (an individual is worth many thousands of US dollars on the black market), The Pantanal is the only region where it is relatively common, because lodge-owners realize the importance of conservation and, on a perhaps less noble note, its tourist attraction. Breathtaking in the air and adoringly clumsy on the ground as all parrots, the Hyacinth's feather suit is totally blue, with some yellow bare-skin around the eye and adjacent to the lower beak. Locals call it black macaw because the inner side of the feathers is dusty black. The Pantanal Hyacinth Macaw feeds on two different palm nuts. The (monogamous) Hyacinth-couple produces two eggs, which remain vulnerable when the parents leave the hollow tree-nest to feed (the eggs are, inter alia, on the Toucan-menu). The Hyacinths usually raise one chick, which stays with the parents for at least half a year. The other chick often hatches later and cannot compete with the older chick for food. A group of these inquisitive, friendly parrots is a striking, impressive sight.
