Retz (A) - "Windmühle" - a photo on Flickriver

            Das Wahrzeichen der Weinstadt Retz ist nicht etwa eine Traube oder ein Weinfass – sondern vielmehr eine Windmühle: eine der beiden letzten, betriebsfähigen in Österreich!
Brot und Wein sind natürliche Früchte menschlicher Arbeit. Sie sind Inbegriff jeglicher Nahrung und, wenn Brot als Opfergabe gebrochen und geteilt wird, sogar sakrale Symbole.
So gesehen ist die Retzer Windmühle im doppelten Sinn symbolträchtig.
Von Johannes Tobias Bergmann 1853 erbaut, wurde sie nach Jahrzehnten einträglicher Mahlarbeit 1924 stillgelegt. Von niederländischen Windmühlenbauern restauriert, dreht und mahlt sie heute wieder – als einzige betriebsfähige, vollständig eingerichtete Windmühle in Österreich.
