" St. Patricks Mountain " - a photo on Flickriver

Croagh Patrick {764m} taken from Westport across Clew Bay, Co. Mayo, Ireland.
Patrick,{ Maewyn } Succat was born to Anglo-Roman parents in Wales somewhere between 370 and 390 AD. His father, Calpornius, was an army officer and a deacon. Patrick had no interest in religion in spite of his parentage, and when he was 16, he was kidnapped by Irish pirates, who often raided the Welsh coast it changed the course of his life forever. He was sold into slavery to Milichu, a chieftain, who put him herding sheep and pigs on Slemish mountain { Slieve Mish } in Co. Antrim. It was a difficult and a hard life. He spent 6 years in captivity and it is said that a vision lead him to escape and hide on board a ship which took him back home.
In his dreams he heard the Irish people calling to him to return to help them, so he entered the priesthood in France where he studied under St.Germain, the bishop of Auxerre.. He spent 12 years working and learning. He became a bishop in 432 and returned to Ireland where he landed in Carlingford, Co. Louth. { See my Carlingford album }
He had many challenges set for him by the druidic priests but he always outwitted them. It is said that it was during one of these that he banished all the snakes from Ireland. He was imprisoned many times but always managed to gain his freedom. It is said that he could work many tricks and perform miracles..
It was on Croagh Patrick where he fasted for 40 days and nights and it is now a place of pilgrimige and people climb it, some barefoot, to pray in the little church on the summit. "Reek Sunday " in July is a day of pilgrimige there
There are many stories about him and a lot are pretty far fetched but scholars do accept that there was such a person.
Patrick died around 461 and is thought to be buried at Downpatrick, Co. Down, NI.
It is amazing to think that St Patricks Day is celebrated all over the World by all nationalities as a special day no matter what they believe in or where they come from. Its a lovely gentle thing where people reach out to one another. Far better than celebrating war and who beat who into submission just because they could.
Its a national holiday here and we now celebrate a St Patrick weekend so my photo is still in time hopefully, as I didnt get time yesterday.
