Red Stripe on the Newcastle Quayside

            I was down the Newcastle Quayside the other night trying to get some decent sunset shots when I spotted this strange cloud formation in the sky. At first it looked like just another red sunset until I saw this red strip in the sky which seemed to get higher as time went on. To top it all the line later looked like a rainbow pattern. I have taken a number of photographs of this unusual site, can anyone tell me what this phenomena is called.
