The first of two Marshall Field "Great Clocks" was installed on November 26, 1897. It was replaced in 1907 with the one that we see today - a Chicago landmark.

The second Great Clock was installed in 1904 at the corner of State and Randolph Streets.

The former flagship Marshall Field and Company Building (the second largest store in the world) located on State Street was officially renamed Macy's on State Street on September 9, 2006. Although Marshall Field's was acquired by Macy's in 2005 - they were required to keep the 2 exterior clocks and the "Marshall Field and Company" plaques in place due to the building's historical significance. Field Marshall's was based in Chicago from 1852-2006.

The building architecture is known for its multiple atria, and for having been built in stages over the course of more than 2 decades. Its ornamentation includes a Tiffany & Co. mosaic ceiling and a pair of well-known outdoor clocks, which serve as symbols of the store.
