Les Bishnoïs (ou Vishnoï) , sont les membres d'une communauté vishnouïte (qui pratique la dévotion envers Vishnou comme dieu suprême) surtout présente dans l'État du Rajasthan, en particulier dans les régions de Jodhpur (cette photo) et de Bîkâner. On estime leur nombre total à environ 10 millions 
Les Bishnoïs suivent vingt-neuf principes (Bish-noï signifie vingt-neuf)   édictés par leur gourou au début du XVIe siècle. Ils se caractérisent par leur végétarisme, leur respect strict de toute forme de vie, leur protection des animaux et des arbres, leur tenue vestimentaire particulière.
Plusieurs épisodes dramatiques ponctuent l'histoire des Bishnoïs dans leur volonté de protéger les arbres ou les animaux, en particulier, en 1730, le massacre de 363 personnes qui s'opposèrent à l'abattage d'arbres dont avait besoin un  maharaja pour la rénovation de son palais.
