Murder in the Mews... - a photo on Flickriver

            Wandering around Fulham in west London recently, I came across an attractive house that was owned by the crime writer Dame Agatha Christie (1890-1976).

The property (in the foreground with the plant pots in front) is in Cresswell Place, an attractive and quiet mews street, and Dame Agatha lived here in the 1920s. She bought the house with profits from her work, and although she moved after a few years, she never sold it. One of her novels, Murder In The Mews published in 1937, was set here. 

Mews houses were originally built in the 18th and 19th centuries as stables and coach houses to accommodate horses and carriages for wealthy people who lived nearby in grander town houses. Servants lived above the stables. Mews streets are usually cobbled and have no pavements. Today, these properties have a very high value indeed.
