North side of the Kirkstone Pass, Lake District National Park, Cumbria, UK

            I timed my crossing of Cow Bridge, north of Brothers Water, perfectly (some might say coincidentally...), as a fleeting gap in the low cloud framed a view straight up the Lake District's highest pass (for road traffic), linking Ambleside and Windermere with Patterdale.
It's far from the steepest Lakeland pass, but the winding road, partly following Kirkstone Beck, still reaches 1-in-4 (14°; 25%) in places on its ascent to 455 m asl at the Kirkstone Inn, 5.3 km from here.
The pass is named after a huge boulder on the skyline, said to resemble the gable end of a church – I think that's it visible to the right of the road, ~4½ km away

Caudale, the side of Hartsop Dodd (618 m summit not in view) is on the immediate left side of the valley, with the flat plane (but not plain!) of Rough Edge beyond and St Raven's Edge almost visible in the cloud at the head of the pass.  Middle Dodd (reaching 654 m, again out of view) forms the right of the valley.
