Ochtendgloren

Rond zes uur 's ochtends is het dagelijkse goederenvervoer van Iowa Traction al in volle gang. Vanwege de warmte overdag beginnen de activiteiten vroeg. Machinist en rangeerder hebben hun steeple cab-locomotief met het nummer 60 voor een goederentrein met ketelwagens geplaatst. Een van de trolleystangen staat nog tegen de bovenleiding terwijl de machinist de tweede stang tegen de rijdraad plaatst. Op die manier is de kans op een vlamboog zo klein mogelijk. Als de voorste trolleystang omlaag gehaald is, kan de locomotief met uiterste krachtsinspanning vertrekken. Ondanks de dagelijkse hitte is de luchtvochtigheid hoog. Bij het krieken van de dag zijn de velden en de rails kletsnat. Vanwege die vochtige rails is er bij het vertrek van de zware goederentrein heel wat zand nodig. Dat zorgt er voor dat de loc regelmatig geïsoleerd komt te staan wat het nodige vuurwerk tot gevolg heeft. Kortom; een spectaculair schouwspel!

Locomotief 60 is in 1917 door de combinatie Baldwin-Westinghouse gebouwd voor de Youngstown & Ohio River Railroad . Via diverse eigenaren kwam de machine in 1948 bij de voorganger van Iowa Traction op de interurban-lijn vanuit Mason City (Ohio) terecht. Samen met enige soortgenoten wordt de machine anno 2018 nog steeds regelmatig ingezet. Via de interurban-lijn worden vooral kunstmest, brandstoffen, veevoeder en landbouwproducten vervoerd.
