Prague is the capital and largest city of the Czech Republic. Nicknames for Prague have included "the mother of cities" (Praga mater urbium, or "Praha matka měst" in Czech), "city of a hundred spires" and "the golden city".
Situated on the River Vltava in central Bohemia, Prague has been the political, cultural, and economic centre of the Czech state for more than 1100 years. For many decades during the Gothic and Renaissance eras, Prague was the seat of two Holy Roman Emperors and thus was also the capital of the Holy Roman Empire.
Today, the city proper is home to more than 1.2 million people, while its metropolitan area is estimated to have a population of over 1.9 million.
Since 1992, the extensive historic centre of Prague has been included in the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites, making the city one of the most popular tourist destinations in Europe, receiving more than 4.1 million international visitors annually, as of 2009

Praga (Praha) è la capitale e la più grande città della Repubblica Ceca.
Situata sul fiume Moldava (Vltava), conta approssimativamente 1,2 milioni di abitanti.
Praga si trova nella parte occidentale della Repubblica Ceca, al centro della regione storica della Boemia ed è attraversata dal fiume Moldava. Tra le grandi città più vicine vi sono Dresda, Norimberga, Linz, Brno e Breslavia.
Il clima della città è nettamente continentale con inverni lunghi e rigidi e abbondanti nevicate (60-70 cm) che iniziano solitamente da metà Novembre. Le temperature in pieno inverno spesso sono sotto lo zero anche di giorno e le minime possono scendere fino a -20 °C. Le estati sono tiepide, talvolta calde con temperature medie attorno ai 20° ma che possono toccare i 30° durante le giornate assolate in piena stagione. Le mezze stagioni sono miti e molto piovose.
Praga si suddivide in 22 distretti amministrativi i quali si suddividono in 36 distretti municipali nel suburbio ed in 110 quartieri catastali (detti anche aree catastali) nel centro cittadino.
Fondata alla fine del IX secolo, Praga divenne ben presto la sede dei Re di Boemia, alcuni dei quali più tardi regnarono anche come imperatori del Sacro Romano Impero.
La città di Praga conserva all'interno della Cattedrale di San Vito le più importanti reliquie della nazione, ovvero le spoglie mortali di San Giovanni Nepomuceno, martire del sigillo sacramentale della confessione e patrono della Boemia.
Praga è una nota città turistica, visitata annualmente da circa 6.000.000 di persone. Ci sono molte case antiche, alcune delle quali con splendidi murali. Contiene una delle più variegate collezioni di architettura del mondo, dall'art nouveau al barocco, cubismo, gotico, neoclassico e ultramoderno.
