In the temple, Ghost Festival, Thailand

An old lady in her best attire and traditional 'ngob' hat attending the ceremonies preceding the Ghost Festival, here before dawn in the temple grounds. Teeth and mouth show the stains from chewing betel nut, a once popular practice nowadays mostly found amongst elders and hill tribes in rural provinces.

The festival is unique to the Dan Sai district in Loei and normally happens in June or July every year. The 3-day events mix ancient animist beliefs and rituals with Buddhist traditions and ceremonies, all mingling happily and seamlessly with the unique Thai way of having a great time, rain or shine.

River spirits and weather gods are paid homage with music, dance, fine clothing and elaborate costumes; sermons read, tales told, prayers said and chanting sung, the temple circumnavigated and rockets fired skywards, visitors teased with wooden swords and giant phalluses; all in the hope the beings in the world beyond are sufficiently appeased to grant a season free from flooding yet abundant rain for a good rice crop, whilst having fun.
