Sunrise at the top of Pico del Teide

            In order to achieve this marvelous shot I spent probably about 20hours of planning, 3 hours driving by car, 12hours of (unplanned) hiking in the cold and often dark and a night of questionable quality at the Refugio Altavista just 800m below.

And all I got is this lousy shot and a set of gear that was completely frozen over - about 1mm of ice covered the Body (D800) and Lens (AF-S 20/1.8) and 5mm covered my tripod head. And later that day I was drying about half a liter of water out of the camera compartment of my backpack. At least no damage was made :)

The funny thing is the clouuds were only looming about 100m above us and nearly everywhere else on the island the sun was perfectly shining. Well, as a nature photographer you never know.

To protect myself from the weather (-5°C, 100km/h wind, all wet and instantly freezing everything) I spent half an hour there mostly hiding between some rocks, hoping it might clear of even more. It didn't. I need to come back another year to capture the sunrise and the impressive shadow of Pico del Teide.
