Gates Of the Charters Towers Hospital (Charters Towers, North Queensland)

            The Charters Towers Hospital maid ward (in brick) was opened on the 11th of August 1884 at a cost of £6915. Vowles and Quinn were contractors working to a design by government architect G S Connolly. Buildings and structures added in subsequent years included a deer proof fence imported from Liverpool, England which still graces Gill street. Wyatt and Gates come on site in 1887 to construct a surgeon's residence desinged by WG Smith and Sons, and ten years later to contract the Nurses Quarters. And some time in the midst of all this, architect William White is reported to have made a plan for laying out the hospital grounds. The hospital continued to be added to with a Fever Ward, a Williams Ward, and on the 12th of January 1898, a Children's Ward. Further additions this century include a maternity ward in 1926 and a baby clinic in 1927. A major rebuild took place in 1957 - 1958.
