Gonepteryx cleopatra (masculino) - a photo on Flickriver

            La cleopatra o mariposa limonera (Gonepteryx cleopatra) es quizás la mariposa más frecuente, característica y conocida de la familia piéridos. En vuelo, con las alas abiertas, muestra su color amarillo chillón, de donde le viene el nombre de limonera. Los machos poseen además una gran mancha naranja en el ala anterior, que les da aún mayor vistosidad. En reposo mantienen siempre las alas plegadas en vertical, mostrando el reverso amarillo verdoso claro. 
La cleopatra pasa el invierno en estado adulto, por lo que es una de las primeras mariposas en volar cuando llega la primavera. 
La mariposa Cleopatra se extiende por toda España, países mediterráneos e islas hasta Grecia y la zona norte del continente africano. Se la puede encontrar cerca de bosques claros y zoñas abierta desde el nivel del mar hasta llegar a los 2.000 metros. Suele pasar los inviernos en los madroñales. 
En cuanto a su alimentación, las larvas de la mariposa Cleopatra se alimentan de matorrales del género Rhamnus, unos abundantes espinos en las sierras comarcales. En el caso de la cleopatra adulta, ésta hace uso de su larga trompa enrollada a modo de manguera para absorber los azucarados líquidos de las flores de las plantas. Además, como es habitual, se preparan para las tareas propias de apareamiento.
