            Linlithgow Palace, West Lothian, Scotland. Birthplace of Mary, Queen of Scots.

Mary, Queen of Scots was born here on 8 December 1542. In the following years little was spent on the palace and in 1607 the years of neglect resulted in the collapse of the roof of the north range. Between 1618-1624 it was rebuilt in the Renaissance style by William Wallace for James VI. In July 1633 Charles I was the last monarch to stay at the palace. The Scottish Parliament met here on several occasions, the last being 1646. Between 1650-1659 Cromwell's troops occupied the palace. 
In 1745 Bonnie Prince Charlie was entertained here. In 1746 a fire gutted the building when it was occupied by soldiers of the Duke of Cumberland.
