Oatman Highway, Rte. 66 AZ - a photo on Flickriver

            My family lives in the Mid-west, and I try to drive back and visit at least once a year.  My first and last stop, depending on the direction, is in Kingman, AZ.  Route 66 goes through Kingman and back towards the California border.  Oatman is an old mining town that is now a tourist attraction along the way.  The road is very curvy, and the speed limit is 20 mph during most of the drive through the pass.  

I love the break from I40 and all the traffic that goes with it.  It adds about 30 minutes to the drive if you don't stop, but I always do.  I like to stop and take in views like this one.  There was a short drive that led to a flat area just off the road.  I was looking for a great view looking East and I found it.  There were a couple of fire rings up here and a few empty beer cans.  I would imagine that sitting in front of a fire on a clear night drinking a couple of beers would be a pretty nice way to end the day.  There is no light pollution here and the sky has to be amazing.  If you ever get the chance to take this side trip, I don't think you'll be disappointed.
