Old Trucks and Wet Feet - a photo on Flickriver

            Just outside of Cedar Grove Indiana, an abandoned International Loadstar waits for it's chance to return to duty on the farm.

Capturing this image should have been pretty straight forward, (sadly it wasn't) and I should have been able to navigate myself and my camera from the roadway over to the truck without getting my feet soaking wet. But, (again sadly) I didn't quite accomplish this.
The barrier to success (and dry feet) on this mission was an old familiar nemesis of mine... the road ditch. In order to get to the truck, I had to cross the road ditch. Now this really shouldn't have been that big of a deal – but I have a long history with road ditches, and that history is pretty much all bad.
Ditches. Large or small, freshly mowed or covered with thick weeds, every encounter that I have with one of these roadside moats turns out all wrong. Usually, a kind of small skirmish developes between me and the road ditch, a battle where one party is left unscathed, and the other (me) winds up with wet socks.
Even when I'm just standing near a roadside ditch, I sometimes stumble a bit or step wrong, and the next thing you know, I'm ankle deep in that extra wet water that's always there waiting at the bottom of an Ohio road ditch.
Most often though, the dampness results when I try to make one of my big graceless leaps – a springy high jump executed to soar over the top of the trough and land upon the chosen ground waiting on the other side.
Typically when I plan a big time leap across a ditch, I  convince myself that I'm going to outsmart the thing. I make a quick scouting trip up and down it's length to find a nice narrow spot along it's path – a spot that has a decent launchpad area in place for my high speed run-up and takeoff, and also a sure fire landing spot on the far side; a spot where I can touch down with the smooth grace  of a fine athlete and then strut myself onward, my shoes and socks completely dry, and my mind clear of any worries about developing some rare form of trench foot a few weeks down the road.
That's the way I always envision my olympic quality leap across a ditch turning out, but in truth the jump usually unfolds much like it did on this day – my launch foot slips badly on takeoff, proper height and distance are not achieved, and my touchdown foot lands well short of dry turf on the other side of the ditch. Instead, my foot lands straight in the muck, my shoe instantly fills with water, and I spend the next several hours with a soaked foot  wondering once again why I can't remember to pack along some extra socks when I head out for the day.
