Twilight Burning

When I was living and photographing in California, some of the most beautiful parts of the sunset were during twilight (that time after the sun had disappeared over the horizon). I would often wait half an hour or more for this to occur... even though the sun had gone down, the clouds would light up again a second time because the sun's reflection off the Pacific ocean. There wasn't a good cloud layer on this particular evening, otherwise the sky would have been even more spectacular... but this was beautiful never the less.

Here in the Midwest, however, that doesn't occur. I discovered that when the sun goes down here, the light simply continues to fade and it turns into night... period. I guess the sun as a hard time reflecting off the corn fields after it has gone down over the horizon. ツ

In this shot, the sun had disappeared beyond the mountain range on the distant shores of the San Pablo Bay at the northern end of the beautiful San Francisco Bay in California. You might notice that a waterbird was slowly making its way into this scene. Of course, I didn't notice it until I was later processing the image (you can see the bird on the left midway between the bottom of the image and Mount Tam). On the right side of the image, the entrance to the Mare Island Strait and Mare Island (with the tower on top) can be seen. Also, a terminal (dock) for oil tanker ships to unload crude oil is visible in the upper, left. This photo was shot at the end of January of 2012 from the shoreline at the bottom of a high bluff, above which the community where we lived in Vallejo was situated.
