Callao Rocks, Peru 3 - An aerial view

            El Callao was founded by Spanish colonists in 1537, just two years after Lima (1535). It soon became the main port for Spanish commerce in the Pacific. The origin of its name is unknown; both Indian (particularly Yunga, or Coastal Peruvian) and Spanish sources are credited, but it is certain that it was known by that name since 1550. Other sources point to the similarity with the Portuguese word calhau [pebble], having a similar sound.
At the height of the Viceroyalty, virtually all goods produced in Peru, Bolivia, and Argentina were carried over the Andes by mule to Callao, to be shipped to Panama, carried overland, and then transported on to Spain via Cuba.

El Callao es una ciudad portuaria situada en la provincia constitucional del Callao1​ la cual se ubica en el centro-oeste del Perú y a su vez en la costa central del litoral peruano y en la zona central occidental de América del Sur. Estando a orillas del océano Pacífico se desarrolla al oeste de la provincia de Lima y a 15 kilómetros del Centro Histórico de Lima, ciudad con la cual se encuentra conurbada.

El Callao é uma cidade portuária situada na província constitucional do Callao.  Ela sobe pelo litoral peruano e tem umas lindas formações rochosas.  Fica a 15Km de Lima e é de uma grande beleza plástica além de um refúgio de inumeráveis animais marinhos como ornitorrincos, leão-marinho e focas.
