The Power of the Sea - a photo on Flickriver

            Built at a higher elevation in 1855, Point Bonita's light was often obscured by the thick fog that commonly settles around 300+ feet from sea level. This forced the building of new, base structures and the moving of the tower and original Fresnel lens to their present, lower position in 1877. 

In order to access the new location, a 118-foot, hard rock tunnel had to be dug. Chinese workers were brought in from the Sierras where they had been cutting tunnels for the Transcontinental Railway. 

Over the years, wind, water and earthquake eroded the trail to the lighthouse and much of it collapsed into the sea; the original tunnel remained intact and is used to this day. In 1940, it was necessary to build a wooden causeway to bridge the gap that had formed between the lighthouse keeper's home and the lighthouse, but it, too, became unsafe. In 1954, a suspension bridge, a miniature of the Golden Gate Bridge, replaced the wooden one, but, despite several renovations, in 2010, extensive corrosion closed the bridge.

Two years, and over $1 million dollars later, a new, Golden Gate Bridge look-a-like was completed. Looking at the photo, however, you can see how rust is once again corroding the bridge's support cables.
