Sheffield City Hall - a photo on Flickriver

            Sheffield City Hall is a Grade II* listed building in Barkers Pool, one of the central squares in Sheffield, England. This photo shows the Memorial Hall at the rear of the building.

It is owned by Sheffield City Council and is operated as a venue for concerts and other events. Construction began on 27 June 1929 and it was officially opened on 22 September 1932. During the Second World War, a bomb exploded in Barkers Pool, damaging the building's front pillars. The scars of the explosion can still be seen.

The building has three main halls; the Oval Hall is largest, with a capacity of 2271. The Ballroom has a capacity of 800, and the Memorial Hall 500.

Performers at the City hall include Nat King Cole in April 1954 and Louis Armstrong in March 1959. The Beatles performed in March/May 1963 and November 1964. Other notable performers include Elton John in December 1971, Bon Jovi in November 1986, Kraftwerk in July 1991, Kylie Minogue in November 1991 and Katherine Jenkins in January 2012.

In June 1934, Oswald Mosley and the British Union of Fascists held a rally in the Hall, while Winston Churchill was awarded the Freedom of the City there in April 1951.

Although I can't claim to have performed there myself, I feel a close connection to the City Hall as my university graduation ceremony took place there in 2000. The last time I visited was to see Queen Extravaganza in January this year.
