Winding Down

            The sun begins to set behind the Sleeping Lady as seen from Point Woronzof.

There are a number of legends that surround Mt Susitna, featured prominently here.  The Dena'ina native people of Alaska call the mountain Dghelishla, or "little mountain." And several of the popular legends refer to a young woman of a Giant People that lay here in repose on the banks of the river she loved.  IN some legends she is awaiting her great love to return from war, in others she was but the first of many in her family to lay down and take the form of mountains throughout Alaska.

On this, my last evening of my first trip to this amazing and enchanting place, she served as the final, peaceful focal point of a bright, sunny 16-hour summer day, as if to invite me to return and enjoy the majesty of Alaska again, soon.
