New Dauphin Island Bridge - Mobile Bay - Alabama

The 17,814’ long New Dauphin Island Bridge was designed under an extremely accelerated schedule for ALDOT (Alabama Department of Transportation) after the original bridge was destroyed by Hurricane Frederic in 1979. The replacement bridge was opened to traffic in July 1982 – just 34 months after the hurricane. Since then, the bridge has stood strong without damage during severe tropical weather along the Gulf Coast. The 400’ main span across the Intracoastal Waterway set a new record for precast concrete segmental bridges. The design features twin wall I-shaped piers and an integral riding surface. All design, engineering, construction, and inspection was completed by FIGG Bridge Group that operates their headquarters out of Tallahassee, Florida and an office in Mobile, Alabama.

This image of the New Dauphin Island Bridge was taken from the beach at Fort Morgan on Mobile Point which is located on the opposite side of the opening/entrance to Mobile Bay. And...the boat between myself and the bridge is the Mobile Bay Ferry that crosses beautiful Mobile Bay and connects SR 193 at Dauphin Island on the west side with SR 180 at Mobile Point on the east.
