Lith Engwijkpad met horthensias. Lith: Engwijkpad with hydrangeas

            het dorp Lith is een van de vier dorpen in Nederland, dat woonpaden kent, en met drie woonpaden heeft Lith de meeste woonpaden. Dit systeem stamt uit de middeleeuwen. Het Engwijpad is het voornaamste pad, en het verwijst naar de "Eng", de hoger gelegen gronden binnen de ring van paden, die in gebruik waren als groententuinen en boomgaarden. De paden lagen hoog, zodat men, wanneer de maas de polders overstroomde, droog het centrum van het dorp en kerk, kon bereiken. Bij bruiloften en begrafenissen. werd altijd de voordeuren van de huizen gebruikt, en ging men via het pad naar de kerk.
De rijweg ligt aan de achterkant van deze boerderijen,. Deze boerderijen hebben aan de achterkant een grote schuurdeur, zodat men vanaf de rijweg (achterstaat), altijd rechtstreeks de boerderij in kon rijden.

The village of Lith, is one of the four villages in the Netherlands, where "Living Paths"are to be found, and with three of these "woonpaden" left Lith has the most woonpaden. The system dates from the middle ages, The most important path is the "Engwijpad". Called so beceause of the "Eng", the higher laying grounds between this ring of paths and the dike., just for vegetablegardens and orchards. These paths where laying high, so that the inhabitants, when the river Maas overflew the polders, could easily and dry gain the center of the village and the church. 
The front doors of these (farm-) houses where in those days seldom used, only for weddings and funerals, and those occaisions always the paths were used, nog the roads at the back of the houses, th go to the church. 

The road for the carriages and the cattle is at the back of these houses. The farms do have at theis backsides a large barndoor, so that from this backroad (achterstraat), the could easily gain the backside and stables of the farms.
