Kinderdijk Blue Hour - a photo on Flickriver

            Take a personal dive into the world-famous struggle between the Dutch and the water that surrounds them. At just half an hour‘s ride from Rotterdam, you’ll find Kinderdijk, the impressive windmill capital of the Netherlands. The Kinderdijk mills were built as a system to prevent the land below sea level from flooding. The historical windmills, dams, dikes and pumping stations form a breathtaking feat of landscape engineering dating all the way back to 1277. At Kinderdijk, 19 authentic Dutch windmills stand tall, sails turning proudly to give you a real taste of Dutch history. 

The Kinderdijk windmills are an official UNESCO World Heritage Site, because they are a crucial part of global history. Throughout the ages, the Dutch worked to claim their country from the sea and rivers. Today, much of the country still lies below sea level, protected by a uniquely impressive series of waterworks.
