Harsh light is a very bright, direct light that tends to occur at midday or with direct flash. It casts sharp shadows with defined edges that may disturb your end product. These unflattering shadows can make images less attractive. Most photographers know what harsh light is and will usually try to avoid it.

I have lived in my face for a long time - no point in soft light or air-brushing; smooth out all the wrinkles and it's not me. (The white hair and beard does upset the TTL metering and flash system when the flash is this close).
