The mother of all glass-and-steel skyscrapers, the Reliance Building changed the course of architecture when it was built in 1890. Located on the southwest corner of State and Washington Streets, the remarkable use of large glass panes gave the world the classic "Chicago window", and the interior steel-frame construction introduced Chicagoans to modern design.

Daniel Burnham's longtime partner John Root died before the building was finished. In young Charles Atwood, Burnham found a talented genius with the ability to bring the project to completion.

Despite decades of misuse and under-appreciation, the Reliance Building was refurbished with painstaking skill in 1999 at a cost of $27.5 million - and is now the Hotel Burnham (a Kimpton Hotel) and Atwood Cafe.

Note: Only a single pane of the original glass remains in place on the fourteen story frame.

The second largest downtown business district in the United States, the Loop's boundaries are the Chicago River on the west, Michigan Avenue on the east, Wacker Drive on the north and Congress Parkway on the south. The Loop is known for its famous skyscrapers and historic buildings; it has been the site of architectural creativity and experimentation for years.
