Wells - a photo on Flickriver

Wells

            Wells Cathedral is a really challenging location when it comes to exposure.  This is due to some interior spotlights that are scattered around and also a mix of stained and unstained windows.  It's relatively easy to get round the stained ones but a real chore trying to balance the clear ones.  Even underexposing by a large number of stops does not help so the intention to blend exposures does not work either.   

I have chosen to upload one of the shots that features only the stained windows.  What's interesting is how the rich interior gives the effect of an exposure blend or some level of HDR/tonemapping.  You will be surprised to know this is actually SOOC.  Well actually, that's not quite true, I have had to desaturate by 20%.  Surprising hey?   I had to double check that I had not accidentally applied some processing gimmick in the camera.    

I think this is the third or fourth time I have been to Wells Cathedral and am yet to capture this shot perfectly.  It is my best attempt so far but I am still ever so slightly to the left.
