Station Stoomtramdiensten - a photo on Flickriver

Het tramstation in een grote plaats vormde de poort naar de stad en was het visitekaartje van de tramwegmaatschappij. Vaak was er extra aandacht aan de architectuur van zo'n belangrijk station besteed. Dit is de zandstenen hoofdingang van het tramstation Rotterdam Rosestraat van de Rotterdamsche Tramweg Maatschappij (RTM). In het gebouw was ook het hoofdkantoor van de maatschappij gevestigd. Het woord "station" is ingesloten tussen twee Mercuriuskopjes. Mercurius is de Romeinse god van de handel, de reizigers en de winst. Met de handel en het aantal reizigers zat het bij de RTM wel goed maar getuige de vele leningen, het niet uitbetalen van divident en uiteindelijk een vijandige overname, was het op financieel gebied een moeizaam bedrijf. Gelukkig heeft directeur van Zuijlen bij de modernisering van het gebouw aan het begin van de jaren zestig van de vorige eeuw de ornamenten en het woord "stoomtramdiensten" niet laten verwijderen. Winst werd er toen niet gemaakt en de reizigersdienst werd op dat moment al geheel met dieseltrams uitgevoerd.
