Certosa di Trisulti - Collepardo (Fr)

            There's a particular region in the province of Frosinone, with monasteries scattered throughout, that embodies the pure essence of the Christian spirit. It's a stop on a journey to the hidden corners of Italy in search of a strong and persistent form of mysticism, still very much alive today.Here, visitors are met with a mosaic of past cultures and civilizations, still vibrant, with all of their charisma. Values closely connected with Christian precepts can be sensed intensely in these ancient sites of worship, where there are also masterpieces by great classical artists who with their work provided a marvellous and indelible testament of religious art and culture.

The Carthusian Monastery or Certosa rises up at an altitude of 825 metres, immersed in the secular oak woods of the Hernici Hills, bordering the National Park of Abruzzo. This wonderful complex of buildings is the perfect place to regenerate and find serenity. The construction of the monastery dates back to 1204 when it was built on the remains of the ancient Benedictine abbey dating back to the year 1000, of which some ruins can still be seen today. The building, despite a series of works carried out over time, including restoration in 1958, has kept its original Romanesque-Gothic style. Originally inhabited by Benedictines for around two centuries, in 1204 it was handed over to the Carthusians who constructed the building we can still see today and kept it until 1947, when it was entrusted to the Cistercian Congregation of Casamari. 
The buildings can be accessed via a door decorated with a low-relief depicting St. Bartholomew, protector of the Carthusians. In the main square of the monastery are the medieval facade of the Palace of Innocence III, which today houses an important Library, and the Neoclassical facade of the church. Rebuilt in the eighteenth century on the original floor plan and maintaining the division in two parts typical of Carthusian churches, separating the monks from the converts, the church is dedicated to St. Bartholomew and houses frescoes and paintings by Filippo Balbi, the burial place of two knights of the crusades, and other works such as a portrayal of the Massacre of the Innocents and of the battle at Casamari against the Lanzichenecchi. The tour continues with a visit to the Cloister and the Chapter House but above all the ancient pharmacy, today a museum, to which this place owes much of its fame. A work by Filippo Balbi from the 1700s, it is decorated with frescoes by the painter G. Manco, and still houses glass cabinets and glass bottles used by the monks to preserve the herbs and spices they collected from the surrounding hills and used to extract the essences and aromas still produced in the monastery today.

La Certosa di Trisulti è un monastero che si trova nel comune di Collepardo, in provincia di Frosinone. È monumento nazionale dal 1873.È collocata tra boschi di querce, nella cosiddetta Selva d'Ecio, alle falde del Monte Rotonaria (Monti Ernici), a 825 m di altitudine e a 6 km a nord-est del centro abitato.Una prima abbazia benedettina fu fondata nel 996 da san Domenico di Foligno: di essa restano alcuni ruderi a poca distanza dall'odierno complesso. L'abbazia attuale fu costruita nel 1204 nei pressi della precedente, ma in un sito più accessibile, per volere di papa Innocenzo III dei Conti di Segni e fu assegnata ai Certosini. La chiesa abbaziale di San Bartolomeo fu consacrata nel 1211.Il nome Trisulti deriva dal latino tres saltibus che è il nome con cui veniva chiamato un castello del XII secolo gestito dai Colonna e che dominava i tre valichi (i "salti") che immettevano rispettivamente verso l'Abruzzo, verso Roma e verso la Ciociaria. Tale castello è andato distrutto, ne rimangono alcune rovine. In seguito il nome si estese a tutta la zona situata su tre appendici (tres saltibus) del monte Rotonaria.Il complesso nel corso dei secoli è stato ampliato e modificato più volte, e si presenta attualmente con forme essenzialmente barocche. Nel 1947 è passato alla Congregazione dei Cistercensi di Casamari.
Per entrare nella certosa, racchiusa da mura, bisogna varcare il grande portale sormontato da un busto di San Bartolomeo, opera di Jacopo Lo Duca, allievo di Michelangelo. Sopra di esso si apre una caditoia che rievoca lotte di altri tempi.
Nel piazzale principale si trovano l'antica Foresteria romanico-gotica detta Palazzo di Innocenzo III, che si caratterizza per il portico e la terrazza e che ospita un'antica biblioteca (36.000 volumi), e la chiesa di San Bartolomeo.
