Survived Guadalcanal, lost to ship breakers

On 1 July 1942 the USS Crescent City (APA-21) sailed from San Diego bound for the initial assault landings on Guadalcanal. Landing her troops 7 August under heavy air attack, she splashed at least five enemy planes. The rest of her extensive wartime service is here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Crescent_City_(APA-21). Even many years after the war, she sailed on 28 major ocean cruises over 24 years!

"Launched as a merchant ship in 1940 and converted the next year into a World War II troop transport vessel, it was the only surviving ship which took part in the invasion of Guadalcanal. The USS Crescent City was awarded the Navy Unit Commendation for outstanding performance throughout World War II, and received 10 battle stars. The ship was decommissioned in 1948, but put back to work as the California Maritime Academy's TS Golden Bear II for 23 years, until 1995. From 1999 until 2003, the ship was in the hands of the Artship Foundation, as part of a failed bid to create a cultural center."

Sadly she was unceremoniously scrapped around 2012 in Brownsville, Texas.
