Castle Hochosterwitz - a photo on Flickriver

            The castle Hochosterwitz is a hill castle as well as a landmark and a landmark of the Austrian province of Carinthia.
The rock castle stands on a 175 m above the surroundings towering dolomite rock east of St. Veit on the Glan in the valley of Gurk and north of the Magdalensberg. The highest point of the castle lies at an altitude of about 660 m above sea level. A. The homonymous settlement is located one kilometer south of the castle hill.

Ceramic remains indicate a colonization of the rock from the early Bronze Age. Other finds are the Hallstatt and the La Tène culture, most of them attributed to Roman times. Spinnwirtel, loom weights, iron slags suggest a permanent settlement.

860 n. Chr., The rock cone was first mentioned in documents originating from the Alpine Slavic name Astarwizza (= Scharfenberg). The castle was until the middle of the 12th century in the possession of the Archdiocese of Salzburg, then as a princely fief until 1478 in the hands of the taverns of Osterwitz. From 1509, the plant was rebuilt by the Archbishop of Salzburg. In 1541, the castle was pledged to Georg von Khevenhüller and purchased by him in 1571. Khevenhüller had the castle from 1570 to 1583 expand to its present form as "an example of Mannerist artistic desire." [2] Since then, the castle has been continuously owned by the Khevenhüller family.
