Bust of Medusa

            Gian Lorenzo Bernini's Medusa, circa 1638 - 1648, is considered to be a Baroque masterpiece.

Bernini's portrayal of Medusa is rather unique. He captures the moment when she sees herself in a mirror for the first time after she has been transformed into a monster. On Medusa's face, Bernini lets her still human emotions show. She is horrified, bewildered and in anguish as her hair transforms into a mass of twisting serpents.
