Awaiting a Highball to Alturas - a photo on Flickriver

            It's around 6:00 PM on a Tuesday evening in Lakeview, Oregon. The crew for Southern Pacific's Lakeview Local has finished dinner down the street, and are preparing to depart town for Alturas, California. 

In the summer of 1985, change is in the air. The Lakeview Branch is 55 miles of tired rail at the base of the Warner Mountains. Stretching south though the high desert to Alturas, the line has an abandonment application pending because traffic has been declining for several years. This will be SP's last summer serving Lakeview. 

The local will soon be on its way, symbolic of SP's effort to highball Lakeview permanently.  Although SP's abandonment was ultimately approved, railroading continues in Lakeview today. In January 1986, Lake County, Oregon  purchased the branch from SP. As this is written, the county is about to complete its 37th year as the owner of the line to Alturas.
