Bangkok from below - a photo on Flickriver

Bangkok from below

A few days ago I published a shot from the top of the Jewellery Trade Center, a view of 'Bangkok from above', now this shot here is a nice contrasting extreme opposite view of 'Bangkok from below'.

In old times Westerners called Bangkok the 'Venice of the East', due to all life happening on rivers, streams and canals. Things have obviously changed a lot, with many canals filled in, or roads build on top over the last 100+ years of crazy growth and development.

But even today there are still many canals remaining, that continue to be an important network. Some canals have regular passenger boats forming part of public transport, others are a standard route for long tail boats hired by tourists visiting floating markets and yet others lead way out into the once smaller surrounding villages, that nowadays are part of the densely built greater Bangkok Metropolis.

Some of the further out canals are badly polluted and not a pretty sight, others lead through orchards and back gardens with people fishing. Some have narrow concrete ways built alongside, which I like exploring with the bicycle as far out as possible. Nevermind it can get a bit tricky on narrow bits when encountering oncoming traffic :)
