Millennium Bridge North Bank View - a photo on Flickriver

This was taken from the South Bank the opposite bank of the Thames to the one posted earlier. It was a dull day but that didn’t matter at night when the lights of a City transform it. My main objective was the view from the Thames Foreshore at low tide which gives such a different viewpoint. This view is from the foreshore just west of the Millennium Bridge looking towards St Paul’s on the left and the City of London on the right. The Millennium Bridge is London’s newest bridge and is a footbridge. It is also known as the Wobbly Bridge because when it first opened it wobbled alarmingly because of the number of people walking across. It had to be closed for a while for adjustments to be made.

This was my first visit to this part of the foreshore at night. All navigable rivers in the UK belong to the Crown and were transferred to various public bodies over the years. For many centuries Londoners have gained public access to the foreshore with a number of access points all along the river with stairs some of better quality than others. There are public access stairs just east of the Millennium Bridge on both the north and south banks. Access is allowed but not digging without a permit. The stairs on the south side were quite good with a gentle gradient and even a ramp. The only problem was that either the last step had worn away or the beach had lowered since the steps were built. I got down and back OK though

I had checked the tides in advance as the foreshore can only be safely accessed for 2 hours either side of low tide. This was at 7.00pm and petty much at low tide. I used a lot of care both getting down the stairs and picking my way over the rocky ground with a lot of bricks. This part was solid ground though other parts of the foreshore have more mud and would need wellies.

The picture was taken on a tripod and with a Sony A68 with a Sigma 10-20 zoom at 17mm. 3 raw images 2EV spacing for HDR. The exposures were 2 seconds, 8 seconds and 30 seconds. The picture was enhanced with HDR processing using tone balancer setting in Photomatix for a natural look; Topaz clarity was used for more detail. In Photoshop some adjustments were made to hue saturation to bring up saturation overall in the reflections only using a layer mask. Various brightness adjustment layers were used with masks to get various areas just right including more light on the underside of the bridge. St Paul’s Cathedral was a little out of line so I used Transform warp to straighten out just the top left of the picture. Heal and clone tools were used to remove some cranes
