Lacock Abbey

            This somewhat austere looking building in Wiltshire was originally a nunnery of the Augustinian order founded by Ela, Countess of Salisbury in the early 13th century. It remained as such until the 16th century when it was sold and converted into a private residence.

It eventually passed into the ownership of the Talbot family and during the 19th century was the home of William Henry Fox Talbot, a pioneer of photography. It was here in 1835 that he became the first person to produce a negative image of a lattice window from which an unlimited number of positive images could be obtained and made stable. This was the beginning of photography as we understood it before digital images appeared.

The house remained in the Talbot family until 1944 when Matilda Theresa Talbot bequeathed the house and nearby village of Lacock to the National Trust, who maintain it on behalf of the nation. It is also home to the Fox Talbot Museum which contains many exhibits and historical information on the development of photography from its inception.  Well worth a visit!

The house is a Grade 1 listed building which it gives it protection from demolition or alteration without prior permission from the Local Authority.
