Österreich, Pasterzengletscher am Großglockner mit bedrohlichem Wolken- und Nebelfeld - 227/471

            Die Pasterze ist mit etwa 9 km Länge der größte Gletscher Österreichs und der längste der Ostalpen. Er befindet sich am Fuße des Großglockner im obersten Talboden des Mölltales (Pasterzenboden). Seit 1856 hat die Fläche des damals über 30 km² mächtigen Eismantels beinahe um die Hälfte abgenommen.

An seinem obersten Punkt bildet der 3.453 m ü. A. hohe Johannisberg das Nährgebiet des Gletschers. Dort befindet sich der oberste Pasterzenboden der talabwärts über den sogenannten Hufeisenbruch in den eigentlichen Pasterzengletscher übergeht. Der untere Punkt liegt auf etwa 2.100 m ü. A.. Die Zunge endet wenige hundert Meter vor dem Sandersee. Das Wasser der Pasterze speist zudem den Stausee Margaritze, der unterhalb des Glocknerhauses liegt.
