            Abraham Lincoln passed through this station twice during his lifetime.  The first occasion was in February 1861, on his way to Washington, D.C. for his inauguration as president.  Lincoln had garnered a bare 2.5% of the vote in Maryland during the presidential election a little over three months earlier, and Baltimore was full of Southern sympathizers.  When the Pinkerton Detective Agency uncovered rumors of a plot to assassinate Lincoln on his way through the city, it was arranged to have him arrive in the middle of the night at a different station than had been planned, and he was then transported through the city along Pratt Street to the Camden Yards station in a closed carriage.  

When Lincoln next returned to the city to speak at a meeting of the United States Sanitary Commission, a private civilian relief agency that aided in the operation of military hospitals and provided assistance to wounded soldiers.  On that occasion, following the Battle of Gettysburg, he was greeted enthusiastically by the citizenry.   

Finally, in April 1865, his body arrived back at this station on the first leg of its return journey by rail back to his home in Springfield, Illinois for burial.  On that occasion, a large and mournful crowd gathered outside the station to bid him farewell.  

On April 19th, 1861, this station was the final destination of the 6th Massachusetts Regiment as it was forced to fight its way from the President Street Station on the east side of Baltimore's Inner Harbor up Pratt Street to Camden Yards to board a train taking it to Washington to help fill out the city's defenses.  

The Camden Yards Station was restored as part of the construction of the new baseball park for the Baltimore Orioles in the early 1990's.
