A needle dam is a weir designed to maintain the level or flow of a river through the use of thin "needles" of wood. The needles are leaned against a solid frame and are not intended to be water-tight. Individual needles can be added or removed by hand to constrict the flow of the river, forming a sluice.
One early needle dam maintains the level of Lake Lucerne in Lucerne, Switzerland by restricting the flow of the Reuss River, several are still in operation on the Meuse River, France and others were built in the United States in the 19th century.

A similar approach, now known as paddle and rymer weirs, was used since medieval times on the River Thames in England to create flash locks.

Ein Nadelwehr ist eine Sonderform eines Wehres und dient wie dieses dazu, einen Aufstau zu schaffen, um entweder durch die entstehende Gefällestufe die potentielle Energie nutzbar zu machen (früher genutzt zum Antrieb von Mühlen) oder eine bestimmte Wassertiefe für die Schifffahrt oberhalb der Wehranlage zu erzeugen.

Das Nadelwehr verläuft diagonal oder quer zur Flussachse und muss den Flusslauf, im Gegensatz zum festen, gemauerten Wehr, nicht vollständig absperren. Es besteht aus einer Reihe von Holzplanken (Nadeln), die auf dem Grund des Flusses durch einen Anschlag an der Wehrsohle und oberhalb der Wasserlinie an einem Laufsteg des Wehrbocks durch den Wasserdruck festgehalten werden. Die Durchflussmenge wird durch Wegnehmen oder Hinzufügen von einzelnen Nadeln reguliert.

Ein Beispiel für ein heute noch genutztes Nadelwehr findet sich in Luzern, wo der Seespiegel des Vierwaldstättersees mit einem Nadelwehr reguliert wird. Das Wasser der Reuss wird dabei oberhalb der Spreuerbrücke in ein modernes Turbinenkraftwerk geleitet. Weitere Nadelwehre finden sich in der Unteren Havel bei Garz, sowie in der Spree bei Neubrück.
