Ephippiger diurnus - a photo on Flickriver

Ephippiger diurnus

            The other day I was lucky enough to come across this little cicada. It perched quietly on a twig, which allowed me to take this photo of it.

What struck me most were its incredibly long antennae, even longer than its own body.

Although it was silent at the time, its song produced by stridulation, a curious mechanism performed by rubbing parts of its wings, often fills the air on hot days. That rhythmic buzzing, which many of us associate with summer, is their way of communicating.
