The Student

Do we know the answers
To faith, love and chances
For seekers of the path
You have to have intention
And listen to the voice of silence
To alter the world around you
Understand its many ways
That will lead you back to yourself
Through the eternal maze
But take your belief and use it
Hold it up and proclaim it
The otherworld is all around you
The home of loved ones and angels
Demons, incarnations and devils
And those who would lead you astray
Are you ready for such combat
Even in the broad light of day
Such ways are not without loss
Pain and degradation
And for some, it will be too much cost
But the rewards are understanding
That in walking the bright path
You will see the connections
From your first day to your last

As I walked through the cemetery of Ocklynge in Eastbourne [Sussex, UK], I was almost overwhelmed with the intensity of it. There is still a beating heart within this place, one that desperately hopes that others will find their way to some kind of resolution to their questing souls.
It seemed to me that there was a quiet hope here, while the outside modern world carried on in its blind way revolving around this city of the dead.

I listened, and this poem and image was the result.

I have paired this work with “The Sound of Silence” the version this time by Disturbed, with David Draiman’s beautiful, yet powerful voice, validated by Paul Simon as the version for our times.

We are running out of time to listen and properly communicate with each other. Listen to the wise voices. Listen to those who will look you in the eye and speak the truth.
