Timber! - 66748 at Romiley - a photo on Flickriver

            GBRf's 66748 'West Burton 50' heads down the curve towards Romiley on 6M17, Doncaster Down Decoy to Peak Forest Cemex Sidings.

6M17 should have been in this spot, just west of Romiley, seven hours earlier than this, but it's original journey from Stourton was capped at Wakefield owing to a lack of train crew. It was instead dragged back to Doncaster to resuming its journey to Derbyshire in a later, existing, path. It arrived just before the shadows encroached onto the running line and just after a squiffy bit of cloud, luckily.

With the Hope Valley line closed from Earles Sidings to Dore until 25 March for the last phase of the Hope Valley Capacity Scheme works, many freight workings that would usually approach Peak Forest from the east are instead diverted to approach from the west, either via the WCML, Northwich and Northenden, or Guide Bridge and Romiley, before rejoining the Hope Valley line again from New Mills South Junction to Chinley North Junction. There have been a steady number of diverted workings so far this working week, including cement tanks from Dagenham and Walsall, which I will attempt to photograph later in the week, as they're a rarity this side of Chinley!

Amazingly, I've never photographed from this spot before as there was a mini forest in between the lines you can see and the lines towards Reddish North which are just left of shot. I did however notice when on the train into Manchester last week that serious clearance work had taken place, evidenced by the large piles of timber in the foreground. This now opens up the location to trains from Guide Bridge towards Romiley in the late morning/early afternoon.
