FIA Formula 1 British Grand Prix 2019, at Silverstone Circuit, near the villages of Silverstone and Whittlebury, Northamptonshire, England, United Kingdom, on Race Day, Sunday 14th July 2019. The photographs were taken from the viewpoint of my front row seat at the National Pits Straight, after Turn 8.

About this photograph.

The F1 Driver.

This is Germany’s Sebastian Vettel, in his team issued outfit and baseball cap, sitting in one of the iconic 1960s British sport cars made by MG. Here, he is seen waving to the spectators, during the pre-race driver’s parade.

Vettel was born in what was then known as West Germany (before the reunion with East German), on 3rd July 1987. He started karting at the age of 3, then started racing in karts at age of 8, and worked his way to his first Formula 1 race in 2006.

He was with BMW Sauber F1 Team, Scuderia Toro Rosso, Red Bull Racing, and Scuderia Ferrari, before driving for his current team with Aston Martin since 2021. He won 4 World Championship titles with Red Bull Racing.

The MG Car.

In the early 1910s, William Morris started his car manufacturing company, later renamed as Morris Motors in 1919. He had his own car dealerships, simply called Morris Garages.

The MG cars started their roots from a 1920s sales promotion of Morris Garages, created by Cecil Kimber, the company’s manager. Kimber simply modified some Morris cars and branded them as Morris Garage Cars (often simply branded as MG), but by around late 1920s - early 1930s, the brand became good enough to become a separate identify as MG Cars.

This car is one of the MGA models built between 1955-1962. I admit I don’t know which of the MGA variations this one is. The MGA were the successor to the MG T-Type models, and the MGA were later replaced by the MGB models.

About the event.

The 2019 British Grand Prix, formally known as the Formula 1 Rolex British Grand Prix 2019, was Round 10 of 21 races in the 2019 Formula One World Championship calendar, during the weekend of Friday 12th to Sunday 14th July at the Silverstone Circuit.

On the day of the race, Valtteri Bottas had the Pole Position.

Starting gird was as follows: Bottas, Hamilton, Leclerc, Verstappen, Gasly, Vettel, Ricciardo, Norris, Albon, Hulkenberg, Giovinazzi, Raikkonen, Sainz Jr, Grosjean, Perez, Magnussen, Kvyat, Stroll, Russell, and at the back end, Kubica.

Simple race summary: On Lap 1, the two Haas drivers collided and pitted, but would later retire due to damages (See my photo www.flickr.com/photos/132335712@N05/49955865996/ which will show Magnussen with a flat rear left tyre).

On Lap 14, Leclerc and Verstappen pitted at the same time, and after pitting for new tyres, had ended up driving side-by-side through the pit lane. By Lap 19, Giovinazzi suffered a mechanical failure and spun into the gravel, which would bring out the Safety Car (see my photo www.flickr.com/photos/132335712@N05/49877436363/ ).

From Lap 24, the Safety Car pulled in, and race was green flagged for normal racing. A collision between Perez and Hulkenberg had resulted in damages to Perez’s car, and after pit stop, would end up being the last car in the race.

Verstappen had overtaken Vettel, but in the attempt to retake 3rd place, Vettel had locked up his brakes and collided with the back of Verstappen’s Red Bull, but both were able to escape and continue the race, however Vettel would be handed a 10-second penalty for causing a collision.

Hamilton won the race for a record 6th time, and claiming the extra point for fastest lap.

Finishing order at end of race: Hamilton, Bottas, Leclerc, Gasly, Verstappen, Sainz Jr, Ricciardo, Raikkonen, Kvyat, Hulkenberg, Norris, Albon, Stroll, Russell, Kubica, Vettel, Perez, and the following cars retired: Giovinazzi (Lap 18), Grosjean (Lap 9), and Magnussen (Lap 6).
