A dying glacier - a photo on Flickriver

A dying glacier

            Mer de Glace is a glacier in the Mont Blanc area. I was here as a young biology student for the first time in 1982, and last august again. 

When I went there for the second time, I had a sort of mental picture in my head, so when I saw the glacier again, I was shocked!

The glacier has shrunk immensely, the ice levels near Montenvers have dropped at least 100 meters in the last 40 years. As the climate warms up further the train station will be without Mer de Glace within ca. 15 years from now.

The left part of the picture is from a color slide that I made in 1982. Just by coincidence I more a less took  a picture from the same place in 2020, which is shown on the right.
