De Blauwe reiger komt in geheel Nederland voor, ook in steden. Holland en Friesland zijn favoriet: hier broedt 60 tot 70% van het bestand. Het aantal broedparen schommelde in het laatste kwart van de twintigste eeuw rond de 10.000. De populatie is vorstgevoelig. Na de strenge winter van 1962/63 was de populatie met 45% in omvang afgenomen. Daarna volgde aanvankelijk een langzaam herstel. In de periode 1970-1975 groeide de populatie jaarlijks met 17%.

The  Blue Heron is found throughout the Netherlands, also in cities. Holland and Friesland are favorites: here 60 to 70% of the stock breeds. The number of breeding pairs fluctuated around 10,000 in the last quarter of the twentieth century. The population is sensitive to frost. After the harsh winter of 1962/63 the population had decreased by 45%. This was followed by a slow recovery initially. In the period 1970-1975 the population grew by 17% annually.
