Original WW1 German Trenches - a photo on Flickriver

            Bayernwald derives from "Bavarian Wood" after Bavarian troops were stationed here at the start of WW1 - the name stuck regardless of what troops were there.

It was in this section of the line that Hitler served as a runner and won the Iron Cross. He revisited the wood in June 1940 after the fall of France.
