Bell Pulls

            While many are long gone, you can still find some of the Victorian tenements around Edinburgh retain the original bell--pulls by the main entrance. In the days before electricity in the home was common, this was how someone let you know in your apartment that they were at the street door wanting in - as the name suggests, you simply grasp the relevant knob and pull it back, it is mechanically connected to ring a bell. 

One of my friends had a flat for years which not only still had these on her block, they still worked, and I delighted in using it every time I went round, even though there was a modern intercom and electrical door buzzer, this was just way more fun. A little bit of domestic history that you can still spot from time to time, if you keep your eyes open.
