FM-2 Wildcat, designed by Grumman, built by Eastern Aircraft DSC_0413

            The FM-2 was an upgraded F4 F Wildcat, with more power and aerodynamic refinements to best use it. FM-1 and FM-2s served on Escort Carriers in the Atlantic and Pacific Theaters through the end of WWII. 

Note the characteristic light gray Grumman painted inside the front fuselage wheel bay. Lower gear legs were black, and the upper hydraulic shock absorber was white. An interesting contrast to the 1940s US standard zinc chromate primer toned with black pigment to resemble the "interior green" standard color. There was no lacquer, enamel, dope or other finish in that color, it was a only produced by adding black to the yellow chromate primer. The toned primer was used as the second coat, so that a cursory inspection showed the required 2 coats had been applied.

Eastern Aircraft was a division of General Motors and served as a "second source" for Grumman aircraft for the US Navy.
